AAPCI Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Policy

1. Introduction

The Association of Adolescent Psychotherapists and Counsellors in Ireland (AAPCI) is committed to fostering equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of its work. This policy outlines AAPCI’s commitment to anti-discrimination, ensuring that all members provide an inclusive, respectful, and affirming therapeutic environment for diverse populations, including LGBTQ+ individuals, neurodivergent clients, and those from marginalised communities.

This policy aligns with:

  • BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions (BACP EDI Standards)

  • IACP Code of Ethics (IACP EDI Policy)

  • Irish Equality Acts (2000-2015) & UK Equality Act (2010)

2. Scope of the Policy

This policy applies to:

  • All AAPCI members (practitioners, supervisors, trainers, and affiliates).

  • All interactions with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders in therapeutic settings.

  • All AAPCI-organised events, workshops, training, and professional development activities.

3. Key Commitments

AAPCI is committed to:

3.1 Non-Discrimination

  • Members must not discriminate based on age, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, neurodivergence, socioeconomic status, or any other protected characteristic.

  • All clients must be treated with equal respect and dignity.

3.2 Inclusive and Affirmative Practice

  • Practitioners must strive to create a safe and supportive space for LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent clients, as well as those from minority backgrounds.

  • Members should use inclusive language, respecting clients' chosen names, pronouns, and identities.

  • Therapists are encouraged to engage in reflective practice to challenge their own biases.

3.3 Accessibility & Accommodations

  • Members should ensure therapy spaces are accessible (physically and virtually).

  • Where needed, practitioners should make reasonable adjustments for neurodivergent clients, such as offering alternative communication methods or sensory-friendly environments.

3.4 Cultural Competency & Ongoing Learning

  • Members must engage in regular CPD on EDI-related topics, such as anti-racism, LGBTQ+ inclusion, neurodiversity, and trauma-informed care.

  • AAPCI will periodically audit CPD logs to ensure members engage in EDI-focused learning.

4. Addressing Discrimination & Harassment

4.1 Reporting a Concern

  • Any member, client, or stakeholder who experiences discrimination, harassment, or exclusion within an AAPCI-affiliated setting can report concerns to the AAPCI Ethics and Complaints Committee.

  • Complaints will be handled in line with AAPCI’s Complaints & Disciplinary Policy.

4.2 Consequences for Violations

  • Members found to engage in discriminatory or harmful behaviour may face:

    • Remedial action (e.g., additional training, increased supervision).

    • Formal disciplinary action, including suspension or removal from AAPCI membership.

5. Policy Review & Accountability

  • This policy will be reviewed biennially to ensure alignment with evolving best practices.

  • AAPCI will consult with experts and diverse communities to improve inclusivity efforts.
